WENDY CHANELIS

“Throughout life, emotions become embedded into your body. Yoga is a way to get into these areas and release the stress.” --Wendy Chanelis

Ms. Chanelis founded Yoga People in 1998 as a way to give back to the community where she was born and grew up. As part of the old world neighborhood she was a former stay-at-home mom. Today Chanelis is a hip grandma and a fixture of Brooklyn’s ever-evolving scene, where she runs a thriving Yoga studio in the heart of the Heights.

The Yoga journey began for Chanelis in 1989 as a way to become physically toned. However, when she discovered its unique method of working the body from the inside out, she discovered something she didn’t realize she was looking for. Yoga had her hooked.

Seeking to grow in her practice, Chanelis explored the various teachings of Dharma Mittra, Integral, Iyengar, and Sivananda. But it was at a new studio called Jivamukti, where she met founders Sharon Gannon and David Life. There she discovered a style that most resonated with her inner search. For many years, Life and Gannon were her respected mentors and teachers.

Eventually, the desire to share her passion for Yoga inspired to create her own hometown studio. Now, over a decade later, Chanelis can be found welcoming locals (often by name) into the doors of Yoga People.

ABOUT THE YOGA

Yoga isn’t about competition or touching your toes. It’s a mind/body discipline, truly accessible to all. When you enter our doors you’ll encounter warm welcoming energy from the front desk staff.

At Yoga People we believe in working the body from the inside out. Rather than focus on one type of Yoga, we feed your curiosity and sense of adventure by offering an array of styles under one roof.

Try Jivamuki, Iyengar, Vinyasa or Ashtanga. And when you want to relax and renew, we offer Restorative, Yoga massage services, and retreats.

What are classes like? Our Yoga is energizing, with a flow, recommended for physically fit types. Here, we celebrate individuality in all forms. Each class is a unique reflection of the teacher’s interpretation of their style. Depending on which you choose, there may be chanting, a Dharma talk, rock and roll…or focus on body alignment. And the only music you hear is the sound of your own breath as you still the mind.

Whichever style you gravitate toward, our Yoga is always led by seasoned instructors, with a nurturing hand, who teach from the heart.

New to Yoga and not sure what to do? A wonderfully personalized option is the four-week New Beginners class. Here, you will start out very slow with like-minded folks and gradually build according to your comfort level.

Check out teacher bios to get the lowdown on specific classes, or be in the moment and allow your self a Yogi surprise.

We encourage you to call or visit. Chat with us, ask questions, and get class suggestions based on your individual needs. Love Yoga and want to deepen your practice? For those wishing to delve into the core teachings of Yoga, or pursue teaching, we also have a comprehensive teacher training class taught in the Yoga People tradition. A limited number of work/study options are available.
